Yes, the pineal gland is the home of melatonin production and is instructed by light exposure to turn off melatonin (usually because it’s daytime) and to turn it back on approximately 15-16 hours later in the average sleeper.
As to it’s relationship to the third eye, I have seen many mentions that it is, yet because it is located deep in the brain I believe the inference is that it receives input directly from the third eye actually located on the forehead, a little above the eyebrows and directly between them. Maybe they’re connected 24/7 if you think of dreams during sleep as “seeing” at night. Many yogi adepts maintain awareness through all stages of sleep, so this may be even more relevant to it’s connection with the third eye.
