Yes, I have experienced this a few times and actively practice this. There are a series of Buddhist practices called Sleep and Dream Yoga, the ultimate goal of which is to maintain awareness through all stages of sleep. Not surprisingly, one of the main practices is daytime meditation. You can see how this would be important and could ultimately carry over into sleep. One of the best books on the topic is written by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche called The Tibetan Yogas of Sleep and Dream, and another by an advanced western practitioner, Andrew Holecek, called Dream Yoga: Illuminating Your Life Through Lucid Dreaming and the Tibetan Yogas of Sleep. These practices were kept secret for millenia, taught only to monks and yogis, and only recently have begun being taught to westerners. As you can imagine, you have to be pretty mentally stable before attempting some of these.
