There is an ancient story once there was a great battle between the Gods and the demons, known as Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean). During this divine churning, fourteen precious treasures appeared, and among them was Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
That day is considered very special according to the Hindu calendar. The appearance of Goddess Lakshmi took place on the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Kartik month.
There is also a logical aspect in the Hindu calendar, each month is named after the Nakshatra (constellation) that appears on the full moon day of that month. The current month is called Kartik Maas, which represents the Krittika Nakshatra.
On this very day, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana in battle. To celebrate His return, people decorated the entire path and city with lamps.
Since the new moon night is dark, people transformed that darkness into light — and that’s how Diwali became the festival that turns darkness into divine light. 🪔✨
