Great question! My nuclear don’t have many opinions on me starting my life in another country, they knew it was an inevitability considering that I always wanted to. However, in India, it’s typically doctors or engineers who are seen as the “Ideal NRI (non residential Indian)”, I.e people in highly technical careers are expected to go abroad & build a life. Whereas I studied social sciences and am an artist. So from a cultural expectation POV, I am writing a whole new script for myself, & (hopefully) creating an example for how non tech, creative South Asians can also make their immigration dreams come true.
My family feels absolutely 0 immigration pull. I posted about this before- my dad and grandparents all had green cards. My dad returned his green card in front of me when I was 13. He did his trainings in the US. All of my mom’s school mates moved to the US to teach & practice medicine. They could have moved anytime if they wanted, but they strongly did not want to.
