One concept from Taoism that deeply inspires me is yin and yang — the idea that reality is not made of opposites that fight each other, but of forces that coexist and balance one another. Light contains a seed of darkness, and darkness contains a seed of light. This resonates so much with trauma healing, because trauma often traps us in black-and-white thinking: I am strong or I am broken, I am safe or I am in danger, I am healing or I am failing. But real recovery asks us to practice something called dialectical thinking — the ability to hold two truths at the same time. I can be deeply wounded and still resilient. I can be grieving and grateful. I can be healing and still struggling. When I reflect on yin and yang, it reminds me that wholeness does not come from eliminating our pain, but from integrating it into a larger, balanced self. This is where true peace begins.
