I will never tell my kids: "That's still your aunt." "That's still your cousin." "That's still your grandpa." "That's still your family." Family is not a free pass to disrespect. My children will grow up knowing they don't have to accept poor treatment from anyone, blood or not. I won't tell them to tolerate disrespect just because someone is family. Instead, I will teach them how to set boundaries without guilt and how to walk away when they are not respected. I want them to understand that respect must go both ways, no matter the relationship. Kindness and respect are non-negotiable, regardless of the title.
