Nigredo is the stage no one talks about. In alchemy, it’s the blackening—the phase where everything breaks down into ash. The old form dissolves so something new can emerge. It’s not failure. It’s the beginning. Psychologically, Nigredo is what it feels like to fall apart. When trauma surfaces. When your identity cracks. When everything you used to hold yourself together stops working. I know this place. I’ve been brought to my knees by sexual violence, by losing my sister and my partner, by two house fires, by addiction, and by mental illness that made my own mind feel unsafe. There were moments where I thought I was completely gone. But something was happening underneath that collapse. The parts of me built on survival were breaking down. The truth was surfacing. And slowly, something more real began to form. Healing isn’t pretty. It’s not linear. It often starts in the dark. If you feel like everything is falling apart, you might not be failing. You might be in the fire. 🔥 The Purple Phoenix Collective
