Peter Brian Hegseth is an American decorated military officer, television host, and author. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hegseth is currently a member of the Fox News network and has previously been a contributor to both CNN and MSNBC.
Returning to his native Minnesota following his graduation from Princeton University, Hegseth served as a member of the Minnesota National Guard. During his decorated service with the Minnesota National Guard, he served as an infantry platoon leader under the direction of the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment. Hagseth volunteered to fight in the Iraq War, where he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and a Combat Infantryman Badge for his service. He was also later deployed to assist with the War in Afghanistan. He is currently serving in the Individual Ready Reserve.
Hegseth has been active in conservative and Republican politics since his days as at Princeton University. After leaving active military service, he served as the executive director of veteran political advocacy groups Vets For Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America, which called for greater privatization of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Soon after returning to Stillwater, Minnesota following his honorable discharge from the War in Afghanistan, he started his first campaign for public office. Hegseth sought to challenge incumbent U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar as candidate for the Republican nomination in Minnesota's 2012 U.S. senate election. However, he eventually dropped out of the race before the primary election. In 2017, he was considered to lead the United States Department of Veterans Affairs in the Trump administration, but was not ultimately nominated due to complaints from some veterans groups.Hegseth had been regarded as moderate-leaning Republican who was a strong advocate for American patriotism, veterans rights, and U.S. Military intervention overseas. However, his views have since shifted to the right and he has moved to become a supporter of Donald Trump's "America First" agenda. The shift of Hegseth's views has been characterized by The New York Times as being representative of the Republican Party's rightward movement under Trump. During his time as a television host and a political figure, some of his views and comments have been the subject of controversy. Hegseth had provoked criticism for his reported persuasion of then-President Trump to pardon three American soldiers accused or convicted of war crimes and his defense of the Army's practices at Guantanamo Bay, where he had served while in the military.
