In Western Christianity, Holy Thursday, also called "Maundy Thursday" or "Covenant Thursday", commemorates the Last Supper between Jesus and his Apostles and falls on the Thursday before Easter.

Nearly all Christian denominations celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion on this day, which was first instituted by Jesus on this night.

Many communities also observe a special service called the "Mass of the Lord's Supper", where the the recital of the Gloria prayer is accompanied by the ringing of church bells, which are then silent until the Easter Vigil.

Some Western Christian denominations observe a washing of the feet (or "maundy") ritual as well.
