In Western Christianity, All Hallows Eve, also called "Halloween", is the evening before the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain, which marks the end of the harvest season and a time when people would pray for the spirits of the recently departed, a practice which was adopted by Christianity to honour saints & pray for the recently deceased.
