New Moon

[object Object]

In Science, New Moon, which is when the silhouette of the moon is only barely visible in the sky, is an event that marks the beginning of the lunar month and is believed to be spiritually significant in many traditions.

New Moons have played an important role in many spiritual traditions. For example:

  • In Jewish tradition, a New Moon marks the beginning of a new month. The Hebrew word for “month” (hodesh) literally means “new moon.”
  • In Buddhist tradition, the New Moon is seen as a time of change and for new beginnings.
  • In Hindu tradition, the New Moon is called "amavasya", which marks the beginning of each month and is seen as a good time to engage in prayer, meditation, fasting, and chanting.
  • In Daoist tradition, in the Chinese calendar the beginning of the month is marked by the last visible crescent of a waning Moon.
  • In Islamic tradition, the sighting of the first crescent moon ("hilal") after a New Moon marks the beginning of each month.
