In Hinduism, Vishu, which is a Hindu festival marking the first day of Medam, is celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala, the Tulu Nadu region of Karnataka, and the Mahe district as "Malayali New Year". It is seen as being a time to start a new chapter in life.

Here are a few ways that this day can be observed according to Hindu tradition:

  1. First thing in the morning, try to see auspicious or joyful things the moment you wake up, which can be good omens for the future. These can include flower blossoms, money or silver items, cloth (pattu), a mirror, or products of the harvest such as rice, coconut, cucumber, or fruits.
  2. Spend time with family throughout the day.
  3. Purchase and wear new clothes ("Puthukodi").
