Sunday of Orthodoxy

In Eastern Christianity, Sunday of Orthodoxy, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of Great Lent, commemorates what is known as the "Victory of Orthodoxy".

The day celebrates the veneration of icons - artistic depictions of important events in the life of Jesus and various Christian saints - as important components of Orthodox Christian worship. In Orthodox tradition, icons are seen as important symbols that help people to visualize and be in the spiritual presence of the person or event depicted on them. Icons are traditionally venerated by burning lamps and candles in front of them, or by the use of incense.
