Clean Monday

In Eastern Christianity, Clean Monday, which is also known as Pure Monday or Green Monday, is the first day of Great Lent throughout Eastern Christianity.

Lent refers to the 40 days leading up to the day that Jesus was resurrected, and this period is intended to be a "workshop" where the character of each person is spiritually uplifted and strengthened and where their life is rededicated to the principles and ideals of the Gospel.

Clean Monday begins this period where Christians are encouraged to engage in fasting and prayer, and to participate in "good works" such as charity and acts of compassion.
