In Eastern Christianity, Cheesefare Monday, which is part of Cheesefare Week, also known as Maslenitsa, Butter Week, or Pancake week, is part of the celebrations during the last week before Great Lent.
In getting ready for the fast that occurs during Lent, during this week no meat is eaten but eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products are permitted - hence the name "Cheesefare".
Today it is customary to eat pancakes made from butter, eggs, and milk.
