In Buddhism, Naga puja, also known as Naga Panchami, is a day of traditional reverence for Nagas or serpents observed by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists throughout India, Nepal, and other countries.

In Buddhism, serpents can represent the idea of freedom (because they can't be tamed) and change (because they shed their skin). They are often considered as water spirits and guardians of nature, and so are associated with lakes, rivers, and other water bodies.
