In Buddhism, Fire puja, which is a ritual of letting go, is used to symbolically burn up any obstacles you have faced in the past so you can clear space for what you intend to do in the future.
Here is how you can do a Fire Puja according to Buddhist tradition:
- Get a fire-safe container (like a cast iron skillet or fire safe bowl) and situate yourself in a place that has plenty of ventilation.
- Write down your obstacles or things you want to let go of on small strips of paper.
- Prepare your environment so that this ritual feels sacred to you, by lighting incense, playing inspirational music, or surrounding yourself with some objects that are sacred to you.
- Take a few minutes to breathe deeply, or meditate, in order to calm youself down and connect to the present moment.
- When you are ready, use a candle or another source of flame to burn each strip of paper one by one, placing each one in your fire-safe container.
- Take a moment to watch each of your obstacles transform from flame to smoke, symbolically clearing them away so you can focus on what you intend to do in the days ahead.
