Breathing is a sacred act in Judaism. The Hebrew word for “breath” is actually the same as the Hebrew word for “soul”—neshama.
The word "chedvah" means "joy" in Hebrew, and this breathing technique is meant to foster joy.
To do it, breath in for 8 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds, and then rest for 5 seconds.
The duration of each part of this breathing exercise corresponds to the Hebrew letters of the word "chedvah" (Ches=8, Dalet=4, Vov=6, Heh=5).
