The term wird means “arriving at a place of nourishment,” and a Wird in Islam is a collection of verses or phrases from the Quran that are strung together to achieve particular spiritual benefits like protection from harm, acquiring virtues, overcoming obstacles, or attaining spiritual states. Practicing Wird meditation involves reciting these passages.
Wird passages are often composed by Islamic saints. There are numerous variations of Wird depending on what it is you hope to achieve.
Perhaps the most famous Wird used today is the Hizb al-Bahr or “The Litany of the Sea”, which was authored by Shaikh Abuʾl-Hasan al-Shadhili, but there are numerous others.
Wird meditations are usually recited as part of a specific ritual, with particular movements of the hands at specified moments along with repetition of certain phrases or personal intention. It is recommended to use a spiritual guide to learn the specific movements associated with each Wird recitation.
