Sama meditation in Islam is a way of using music while reciting devotional poems or hymns praising God or questing for God's presence.
Music in Sama meditation can be used in different ways: a person can either sing a part of the devotional poem themself, they can sing with others, they can listen to a professional singer who vocalizes the poem without any accompanying instruments, or they can listen to a singer who performs with instruments accompanying them.
Sama meditation can also involve motion or dance that accompanies the music. Some types of Sama involve the meditators standing in lines facing each other or in interlocking circles and moving with the rhythm.
Other types of Sama involve the meditator engaging in gentle swaying or stepping. And other types of Sama, like "Sufi whirling" involve watching trained professional dancers move along to the music in a trance-like state.
