A puja is a Hindu ritual to honor the deity, or manifestation of ultimate reality ("Brahman"), that is being celebrated today. Common deities honored include Vishnu, Shiva, Durga, Lakshmi, Ganesh, Saraswati, Krishna, Rama, and Kali, who each represent a different aspect of ultimate reality.
Pujas can have many variations, but the most common ritual involves:
1) Setting up a clean space
2) Placing a murti (an image or statue) of the deity being honored on the east or north side of that space
3) Invoking the deity (Avahan) to inhabit the space you have created
4) Offering incense (Dhoopa) to the deity to purify the environment
5) Offering water (Achamana) to the deity for drinking and for purification
6) Offering flowers ("Pushpa") or food, fruits, or sweets (Prasad) to the deity
7) Chanting a hymn or mantra to seek the deity's blessings
8) Once finished, respectfully dismissing the deity (Visarjan) so they can return to their divine abode and leave their blessings behind
