One of the major techniques of Western Christian meditation is called "Lectio Divina", which translates as "Divine Reading".

It is a technique for slowly reading one passage of the Bible at a time and meditating on, or thinking about, the meaning of the passage being read.

The first step of "Lectio Divina" meditation is to simply choose a verse from the Bible. It can be a short verse, and in some ways the shorter it is the better so that you can focus your thoughts.

The second step is to meditate on the verse. Just stop and think about the specific lines you just read, and think about what they mean. Ask yourself why the people in those verses are doing what they are doing or saying what they are saying?

Thirdly, once you have had a chance to think about the Bible verses you just read, pray. Talk to God about what you were thinking about. Try to have a conversation with God about what you were thinking, and ask for His guidance and understanding.

Finally, after you have meditated (thought about the verses) and prayed (talked to God about your thoughts), contemplate. Think about whether there are any "take-aways" or lessons that you can learn from these verses.
