In Buddhism, making a symbolic offering is seen as a way of practicing generosity (Dāna) and accumulating positive karma on the path towards enlightenment.

Traditionally, offerings are made to one of the "three jewels" of Buddhism: to the Buddha, to the Dharma (the Buddha's teachings), or to the Sangha (the Buddhist community).

Customarily, there are seven types of things that can be offered: water for drinking, water for washing, flowers, incense, light (usually a lamp or candle), perfume, or food.
